Sekai-Ichi 07: I don’t always watch Yaoi, but when I do, I prefer Masamune

"I don't always drink coffee, but when I do..."

“…it’s so I can trick Ritsu into holding my hand.”

Exactly as planned.

Masamune has returned, and he’s in as fine a form as I could have wished for.

"Man this Chiaki arc was such crap. I can't believe we wasted 2 episodes on this."

Okay so Masamune didn’t say that. But I wish he would.

Apologies in advance for any screencaps out of chronological order or any nonsensical quotes. I’m just too psyched and too filled with excitement over Masamune’s return to centre stage.

"Guys, they won't start the Yaoi action with us hanging around."

I didn’t realize how much I missed the artshifts until it popped up again.

Not that artshifts would have saved the trainwreck of the Chiaki arc, but it would have at least made it more bearable to watch.

I was waiting for this for two whole episodes.

I’m not sure why it works. Why I was squirming in discomfort whenever Yoshiyuki and Chiaki were kissing but fangirling in glee when it’s Ritsu and Masamune instead.

All I know is that I’ve certainly missed the Masamune-Ritsu interactions. The bickering. The blushing.

The unexpectedly violent denials.

This one really came out of nowhere. I didn’t actually think Ritsu would actually hit Masamune in retaliation.

Of course, Masamune simply shrugs it off, unrepentant.

And I love him for it.

Sorry Yoshiyuki, but you’re years away from reaching Masamune’s level.

This is how a love triangle ought to be.

It should be awkward. Tense. All three parties knowing that something’s up, teasing and testing each other, all experiencing the same level of discomfort.

Not like that masturbatory work where Chiaki gets to angst about choosing between two lovers, both of them subserviently attending to his every need.

(I’d bet that both Ruri and Sena could write a better threesome masturbatory work than that.)

Awkward. Tense. Teasing.

If Masamune wasn’t in the picture, I’d be pushing for a Ritsu-Yokozawa end.

Actually, no. The chemistry just isn’t there. I can see Masamune and Yokozawa taking care of kittens together but Yokozawa and Ritsu are definitely fated to be at odds.

Alas, poor Yokozawa. You’re doomed by canon to be left single and alone.

For a recurring appearance, thank goodness it wasn't his significant other.

Yet if there’s anyone in Sekai-Ichi who’s really doomed, it’s Yoshiyuki.

I used to speculate that his wooden demeanor and inability to smile was due to a remarkable sense of responsibility and inner strength. Now I know that it’s because he’s fated to be shackled to one-sided relationship with a selfish, unfaithful, emotional vampire.

I’m really harsh on Chiaki, aren’t I? I suppose I ought to go read the manga to gain some perspective. Someday, someday.

For Masamune, it wasn't just Tuesday.

This probably wasn’t drawn too well. The odd depiction of Masamune’s shock and anger(?) aside, I found his expression all too reminiscent of a certain videogame movie character.

If Masamune was to be dubbed, I would have had Raul Julia do it. Because it would have been hilariously out of place. RIP Raul Julia, you are a legend and a truly fantastic actor.

A girl in my Yaoi?

I have discovered a new favourite side-character. Her name is Saiki, and she is awesome.

She’s adorable, she’s funny.

And she'd probably drink me under a table.

That caption doesn’t mean what you probably think it means.

I used to dislike girls who drank. Probably because I associated drunkenness with sexual promiscuity. But I’d happily go drinking with a girl like Saiki.

Dammit Ritsu, your emotionless face just kills me.

Ritsu and Saiki do look rather cute together.

Wouldn’t you agree, Masamune?

Poor Masamune. One shock after another.

Saiki’s just really attractive. I think it’s because she resembles Amagami SS’s Miya in both looks and personality.

It would be terribly out-of-character, but I’d love it if Saiki joins Masamune and Ritsu and turns their couple into a One True Threesome. There probably isn’t any doujinshi of this scenario, and there probably won’t ever be. Pity.

-fangirlish squee-

After a terrible day, it’s not particularly surprising that Masamune simply loses it and forces himself on Ritsu.

It looks awkward for a reason.

What is surprising is what Masamune does after they break the kiss: he grabs Ritsu’s hand and presses it against his crotch. At least, that’s what it looks like. I doubt Masamune’s getting Ritsu to prod his hip bones.

Is this a common thing? Speaking as a guy, I haven’t been in this close contact with a girl, but I’m assuming that most girls wouldn’t appreciate you grabbing their hands and pressing it against your crotch.

Probably yet another sexual thing that only Yaoi can get away with. Or maybe it’ll be revealed in the Blu-Ray release that Ritsu really is checking out Masamune’s skeletal structure.

A taste of honey.

Okay so I realise this caption is exceptionally gay. Even gay people might be irked by it.

All the same though, Masamune’s slowly progressing. One day Ritsu’s going to find himself tied to the sofa with Masamune dripping hot wax on him and he’ll find it completely normal.

Not that I actually understand the appeal of dripping hot wax on people. I mean, why use wax when you can use melted chocolate, right?

Third shock of the day. Masamune's not faring too well.

In his call to Masamune, Yokozawa brings up some interesting bits of history – Masamune has fallen to pieces before, not only from of his first breakup with Ritsu, but also from several subsequent failed relationships presumably during university.

I doubt we’ll get to delve into Masamune’s past, but it’s nice to know that Masamune’s as human as the rest of us.

A new bishōnen who could rival our devilishly handsome Masamune.

This is Isaka. I doubt we’ll see him again, but I’ll love his appearances while they last.

Other than that I’m not quite too sure why I’m adding this in. I must be turning homosexual, or bisexual at the very least. Food for thought.

Just look at that smirk.

Really. Just look at it. There’s nothing more that needs to be said.

-fangirlish squee number 2-

All things said and done, Ritsu and Masamune really look good together.

I know the standard final episode would have the two of them becoming an official couple, but I was hoping that they’d get together earlier so that the remaining episode can show their lives together.

Kind of like Amagami SS’s ’10 years later’ endings for Haruka and Tsukasa. I mean, we all know that they’re going to end up together. So why not show them living together after the honeymoon’s over?

I want a chibi plushie of laughing Masamune.

Thank goodness for Masamune. I really can’t imagine Sekai-Ichi without him.

Oh wait, I can. No thanks to the past 2 episodes.

Next Episode:

Another new couple. I’m hoping that they won’t let me down this time, but from the OP, I think they’ll turn out fine. I’m not too sure about the black-haired dude, but the brown-haired guy looks to be made of Masamune-ish material.

If nothing else, it couldn’t possibly be worse than the Chiaki arc, right?

Oh, if only it were that simple.

GAH, I could shoot myself in the foot right now! why? This . AARRGGHHH! It sucks, I know it suck too, but I’m still posting it |||OTL. I’ve thought about it and I’ll try, but I’m probably going to be shot down here and that’ll be the end of it |||(_ __). If it’s not apparent yet, I’ve got no self-esteem plus horrible stage fright.

On a brighter note, I freakin’ told you Seki-ichi Hatsukoi would lead you off the straight and narrow! xD I’m sooooo happy that they’re following the original author’s story again, I hope that Chiaki doesn’t show up again for at least a good 8 episodes or better yet, never again. And what’s more my long awaited adorable true second pair is on its way ¦D. Sorry to burst your bubble though, but personality wise the brown-haired guy is far from Masumune. Frankly although he’s good at times, but he suffers from a personality trait I hate (and the black-haired guy also gets bothered by it, seriously he and I are so similar it’s weird >_<).

I’m so sorry! I didn’t think you’d rush off into it already, but what I actually meant was that if you were okay with it, we should set up some means of communication (Windows Live, IRC perhaps) to discuss things first. And it’d help if we could coordinate time zones. As it is I believe you’re awake when I’m sleeping and vice versa -_-”

I think you could let yourself loose. Where’s the enixfire I know who’d write paragraph after paragraph without a care for anyone’s judgement? (: I’d be happy to edit your work until you feel comfortable and develop your own style. But only after we get that comms working, of course. Having to go through Mediafire repeatedly isn’t exactly efficient nor convenient. That said, you’d probably reduce the amount of screencaps you use. I don’t know how the other writers do it, but uploading pictures to WordPress is the most painful part of my writing process. Maybe they’d give you some tips on that too.

The brown-haired guy seems rather sweet. At least, in the OP, he gives his partner that passionate hug? I don’t know! I don’t want to speculate anymore. Such are the scars that the Chiaki arc Yoshiyuki tragedy have left upon my heart.

T-T The me that’s used to writing paragraph after paragraph was feeling like crap at the time and wrote a pretty crappy comment (typos-a-plenty) & review. I can’t stress it enough that I tend to panic in pressure situations resulting in crap (I rechecked and rechecked it and thought to maybe tone down the amount of pictures I used too, but at that point I was the living dead and couldn’t be arsed to (thank god I relitively calm enough to me myself at 2am when I’m dying of heat and unable to fall asleep)). Over here it been like 90 something degrees and it’s been messing with me (not to mention right before I began writing I had a 3 hour math section x.x). Setting up at IM thing would be rather convenient, windows live or skype is fine by me (I can actually see windows live IMs thought my phone so it eliminates the problem of me being away from my computer) my e-mail’s enixred@hotmail.com & my skype is enixfire too (frankly I’m enixfire or some veriation everywhere on the web). As for the time differences we’re on a twelve hour time difference methinks. I would think it is probable to talk around the 9 – 12ish times since it won’t be too early in the morning or to late at night.
        Frankly, I’m kinda unsure about the process at all (wordpress is entirely new to me) and as of now I seriously need to work on my word to picture ratio and what I should actually hit upon in a review -_-;. Wow, its 3am already, guess who’s ganna be dead tomorrow and have to work on a 15 page labreport due Monday <_<;. I would really appreciate it if you would help me when you could. Gah! I hate the summer heat! ;__;

Windows Live could work. WordPress takes a little getting used to, but you can write a draft and have someone edit it for you. But the most important part of being a writer is perseverance and determination. If you can force yourself to push out several paragraphs about something you dislike, you’d have no problem writing about something you love.

We’ll play it by ear yeah? I’ll be free for the first week of June so maybe we can get things going then. But until then, don’t stress out so much about writing reviews. If you’re passionate in your writing, people will see it (y)

      • May 22, 2011 at 9:23 pm

is it ok if the team adds you on our windows live?

It’s entirely okay by me🙂. In fact I really appreciate the fact you guys actually are willin’ to help me out (the internet is equally briming with kind people as it is briming with trolls, haters, and douchebags). I don’t know how best to show you all my appreciation for being willin’ to bear with my inexperience, thank you >_<.

Kind of expect that you will squee over Masamune this episode🙂. I like how Masamune doesn’t waste any time to get to the point. Such as in the scene with Yokozawa’s phone call, Masamune opened fire even before his friend said anything. Poor Yokozawa, his concern is not appreciated at all.

You didn’t mention that in the “do your best” scene, Takano’s hand was a bit lower than appropriate for a reassuring gesture. That makes his “have your back” statement mean something different.

That Isaka guy is awesome in his own way. In his own story, he was in the same position as Ritsu (being badmouthed about his connections) and this was his reaction (don’t go beyond page 13 if you don’t want to get to the yaoi).

The upcoming couple’s story has one of the best naughty lines in BL. Or so I heard.

    • enixfire
      May 22, 2011 at 7:37 am

Naughty lines in BL? I beg the differ, although the black-haired dude is “experienced” I didn’t find anything they did too naughty(the opinions of a fujoshi can’t be taken at face value though, what I might consider a-okay, might not be a-okay to everyone). Also if anything Studio DEEN’s probably going to concern everything.

      • musicalcroc
        May 22, 2011 at 7:55 am

Oh, what the people I chatted to mean with “one of the best naughty lines in BL” is this particular scene. I try not to spoil myself about the context of the line, but it did make me crack up.

      • enixfire
        May 22, 2011 at 8:06 am

Oh that! Yea, that’s defiantly a great scene, but I wouldn’t classify that as naughty in my book. Oh that’s a great scene though, it had be smirk and giggle. Naughty for me is more along the lines of a right here and right now thing and way more explicit. What the brown-haired guy said there I’d take as a confession or a compliment rather than dirty talk.

      May 22, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Believe me, if I had it my way, I’d have put in those screencaps (that ass-grope was heavenly), and made a .gif of Masamune laughing, but WordPress screws my posts over if they’re too long. That and I’d been writing the post for 5 hours, being sidetracked by YouTube and I really needed to sleep. Yeah, it was all WordPress.

Isaka is a Seme, right? The devil-may-care attitude and the way he yawned and moaned about the early morning meeting endeared me to him rather quick. He comes off rather Uke-ish in the manga though.

I swear, the things Yaoi manga can get away with. No guy can say that to a girl, no matter what their relationship, without getting a bare minimum of a cold shoulder. Well unless she’s an actress. Or a callgirl. Not that I’d know.

      • Higanzakura
        May 22, 2011 at 1:01 pm

If you’re talking about that “particular scene” when you said every girl would give a cold shoulder, then obviously you don’t know enough about girls😉 or maybe women for that matter😀

The previous 2 episodes are really horrible but I don’t think this one is that good. It feels like the author was doing it in a roundabout way, with Masamune and Ritsu act childishly a little to lengthen the time they get together:\

      • JohnnyYandere
        May 22, 2011 at 4:38 pm

I must have been hanging out with the wrong type of girls. But all the same I’d be pretty unnerved if a girl reacted positively to a comment like that. An easy mark for female trolls, that’s me.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But all the same, it’s fun to watch Masamune and Ritsu together, so I don’t mind them sniping at each other for a few more episodes.

@Johnny: You wrote this review in 5 hours? Then thanks for your dedication (have tried to review anime before but give up because I’m too lazy).

In his own manga when he is still young and somewhat angsty, Isaka is designated as Uke. But he is the one with dominant personality in his relationship and is as big a troll as Masamune so I don’t know how to classify him.

About that line, in where I live, it does count as naughty and saying that to someone you are courting is probably not a good idea. But it’s not really out of line between partners.

@Higanzakura: I have heard complaints from manga readers that the author keeps Ritsu and Masamune not to get together in a ridiculous length of time. On the other hand, like Johnny, I like their bickerings.

Still the way things look, it does seem worrying that the anime will not reach something that resembles a conclusion.

        May 22, 2011 at 11:53 pm

I should never have taken this long. But yeah, I didn’t have work today so I was procrastinating something terrible. I’m just glad I’m somewhat following a regular post schedule. I can be so very lazy sometimes.

Isaka should get an OVA. I cannot get enough of his carefree attitude.

I dunno. Maybe I’m just too conservative? Or maybe the girl I like is too conservative. I definitely couldn’t say that line to her, even if we were together :3

“‘And she’d probably drink me under a table.’ That caption doesn’t mean what you probably think it means.”
Huh? What else can it mean? *thinking for a bit* Oohhhh ewww, that’s nasty!😄 Unless…you actually meant it the dirty way. @.@ But I won’t judge.

Hahaha, jokes aside, I’m happy too that the main couple’s back on the stage, and we have bid goodbye to the Chiaki arc. (I like how you didn’t forget to vent your dissatisfaction with Chiaki whenever you got the chance.) But lo and behold, supposedly there will be another Sekaiichi OVA coming, and it’ll be about Chiaki again…>.> *not sure if want.

    Back to the main topic. There’s no mistaking what Masamune and Ritsu were doing in that scene in Masamune’s room if you read the manga: they were actually stroking each other’s until Ritsu c*me. O.O But I understand the need for some censorship in televised anime, so I won’t yell at the producers for taking out the nasty bits. ^^;

I also totally fell for Saiki. I mean, in the manga I didn’t feel much for her, but seeing her animated and hearing her voice, I found her surprisingly cute and attractive. I totally wouldn’t mind RitsuXSaiki, although that would never work because 1. Ritsu probably wouldn’t fall for a girl, and 2. I’d hate to see Masamune heartbroken. =(

All that’s left for me to do now is to wait for one more week for the debut of the last couple. I have high expectations for them because, like the MasamueXRitsu couple, they were also created by the original mangaka Shungiku Nakamura, so they are automatically superior to the Chiaki arc.

    • JohnnyYandere
      May 22, 2011 at 12:25 pm

That caption… means what you think it means. I won’t say anything more than that :3

I’m on the fence about Chiaki. Is he really that much of a jerk, or did the anime ruin him? Sadly I’m not sufficiently interested in him to read the manga/light novels as of yet (Unlike OreImo).

Oh so that’s what they were doing. -snorts- Isn’t it rather difficult to… arrive at a conclusion if you’re still clothed and drenched from the rain? I’m going to have an endless supply of poor gun control jokes if Studio DEEN keeps this up, if you know what I mean.

I know right? I just hate it when they create side-characters who you end up falling for even though you know they won’t be appearing again. Man. Time is passing really fast. Or slowly. It seems like only last week that I was reviewing Episode 02. Well, 5 (or is it 6?) more episodes to go. Here’s hoping they saved the best parts for last.

    • musicalcroc
      May 22, 2011 at 6:12 pm

I like Saiki too. She seems to be fun to hang around with. She and Ritsu look like a pair of dolls together. Really cute. Sadly Masamune doesn’t think so (Or he does think so hence his ill-concealed jealousy).

The Sekaiichi fandom is very, very excited about the coming episode so I think the new couple should be good. And like you said, they are created by Shungiku Nakamura. Her drama may carry some WTF elements, but they are entertaining most of the time.
